A routine night flight over Bass Strait. A strange aircraft overhead. And then, nothing. This is what actually happened -- and what still doesn't add up.

Spatial disorientation. A 2013 analysis proposed Valentich mistook a tilting horizon for level flight, entering a "graveyard spiral" -- and that the lights he reported were the planets Venus, Mars and Mercury alongside the star Antares.
Reflection while inverted. Some investigators suggested Valentich became disoriented and saw his own aircraft lights reflected in the water below while flying upside down.
A staged disappearance. His Cessna carried enough fuel to fly hundreds of kilometres further, was never picked up on radar despite clear conditions, and police received reports of a light aircraft landing near Cape Otway that same night.
The UFO reports. Some ufologists maintain the aircraft was destroyed or the pilot taken -- pointing to the green light Valentich described and a photograph taken near Cape Otway Lighthouse that day, still debated to this day.
No theory has ever been proven. The Australian Department of Transport's official file lists the case as unsolved, and Frederick Valentich remains, 47 years later, a missing person.
